Some know that I believe I have a spiritual connection with these creatures. Maybe it's because my grandfather had a dairy farm that I so loved visiting. But, the funny thing is, I can be stressed to pieces and drive out of our little town just a few miles and see cows and feel such a warmth in my spirit. Yes, that's me. I admit it. I am embracing painting flowers! I'm erasing from my memory all the old stodgy still lifes I studied in 3 semesters of Art History that had dark, boring floral themes that have kept me so against painting flowers. Just ask my students who know me. ;) I'm deriving my own now! This one evolved from a demo I started in my Color Cafe class this week. The rich, oil impasto of the foreground flower was fun to do against the blended, blurred smoother background flowers.

I found this photo of a pile of craw-daddys in a book in New Orleans when I was staying at the Monteleone Hotel and loved the way they were lying there looking at the camera. The photo was fantastic in and of itself, but I wanted to translate it into paint showing the details that photo held in the most-focused areas. So you will see the texture of the claws and the dimensional eyeballs in this. It was fun to do! As my student, Sarah, could attest, I started this very haphazardly and was glad that she wasn't really following along, but it finally came to life. We laughed about it.

Soft Tuscan Landscape

One of the many Tuscan landscapes I've done since my last visit there in September. The colors in this one are much softer. What I loved is the cool color of the dirt road that winds through it next to the warm colors of the sun hitting the trees. In the distance you can vaguely see small Tuscan homes.

This little French bulldog modeled for a photographer who had the photo put into a catalog for Black House White Market-is that the name? Do you know which one I'm talking about? With love in the air in my studio, and Valentine's Day coming, I went for a festive background color to blanket my love in. I've painted Tabasco so many times, but I don't know if I've ever chosen magenta for the background. This one is very textural with layers and layers of rich color! Passion & Glory! Mark Ingram

Celebrating the National Championship with lots of folks in my sweet home of Alabama, I painted this awesome image of Mark Ingram after the Crimson Tide defeated Texas in the BCS Championship game January 7th. When I am moved by greatness as this young man has displayed this year, winning the Heisman and leading his team to win the championship, I head to my canvas with lots of adrenaline flowing along with the paint. I finished this large painting just as the team was landing back onto Alabama soil from California, landing as champions. "Sweet Home Alabama" even played loudly as I painted. Pride for this young man overwhelmed me.

Mudbug Boil

Couldn't wait any longer to use that so inspiring lovely RED that I kept seeing in some of the items in Louisiana depicting crawfish. That spicy, orangy, brownish, but Cad Light red that I love so much and sign my paintings with. Uh!! Just gets to me. I pulled out a couple of canvases last week and worked on one of my favorite subjects--crawfish! This one is texture-y on the shells--building up the red!

Finally, I have finished a piece from my recent travels to Italy. Tonight is my next Paint Night of a Tuscan Landscape at the Ledges in Huntsville, Alabama, and this is what we will be painting. It will be about Tuscan rooftops in a beautiful landscape. I am taking this piece with me to have on display to help the students. The photo that this was painted from was taken from a high perspective in Cortona, Italy right at the wall that surrounds the hill town. Every view down is sweeping and breathtaking. Another in my ongoing series of singers / musicians--it's the Great Satchmo! With my Louisiana roots and love of New Orleans, it is very fitting that I would love the sounds of Louis Armstrong. Just playing jazz while working on this piece fueled my inspiration and got my brushes going! Anytime you see images of Louis, he usually has his handkerchief with him to wipe his brow. Would have loved seeing him in person! My Dad got to a few times while in college--before Louis was very popular. Dad says it was amazing to watch him!

Alabama Campus

This is a painting that I worked on for weeks and weeks. It was like 8 paintings in one. But more than anything, it was a challenge to actually put my heart into something my heart is opposed to! I am an Auburn graduate commissioned to paint much of the University of Alabama campus! How in the world could I do such a thing?? Money! And this was done for one of my best clients ever. This painting adds to her collection as probably the 11th or 12th painting she owns by me. So, yes, I could find it in my heart to do this for her--especially since her husband actually commissioned it for her 50th birthday. Sweet, huh? The buildings in the painting are all buildings that she visited most while she was in college there. Very special.

The day I finished it, I was studying it as I do all my paintings once I believe I have finished them. I was sipping coffee out of my favorite mug. ;) I love irony....Thanks to my wonderful clients!

Today, I began a couple of pieces that are to go with a crab I did a while back. The crab sold to a client who also wanted a shrimp and a lobster to go with it to hang at her beach house. I had a ball firing them up and getting them done today. I utilized with the beeswax some pigment sticks I bought a while back and had never used. So much fun! Here are the 3 pieces together.

Only those who know breeds of crabs will understand the title of this painting! I began painting crabs several years ago, and they are always so much fun with great opportunities for color and portrayal of wetness. Personality can evolve as well once eyes are added. Several layers of paint created lots of scumbling effects throughout this piece, especially in the neutral areas--there are lots of colors that come through.

"Large Pair" was finished quite some time ago, and it's been hanging high in my gallery with lots of adoring patrons commenting on it. Colorful Fish

This colorful piece was begun in my art camp I held last week. At the end of camp, it wasn't finished, and I didn't really plan to finish it until my daughter said, "Mom, don't you dare paint over that. You put it in the gallery and it will sell!" So, I did as I was told, finished it, adding the little worried worm, and put it in the window a couple of days ago, and it sold today. Thank you, Sarah for such great advice! It even led to the sale of definitely one more painting, but possible 3 more! So, I am glad I heeded her advice. :) The client loved the texture and layered effects as well as the vibrant color.

Today, I was finally able to finish my diptych of the America flag that I've been working on for a while now in encaustic. I had run out of gas in my propane torch and ran by Lowe's earlier and was able to fuse the last layer of the painting. It is sealed and ready to sell! I envision this being hung as one piece with each piece held together by 2 hooks and rings. My husband will have to do that for me or my local frame shop if Todd can't get to it as soon as I need it. This piece was inspired by Jasper Johns' flag that he did many years ago. I love alot of his encaustic pieces!

The Maine Thing

Today's painting began early this morning on my porch, and I just had the inspiration to get one done as it is June, and I really want to start painting as many mornings as possible. And sitting on my cart was a great photo of this blue crab, so there I went. I've painted many crabs, but not one this small, but people tend to love them because they go well at beach homes and small special areas of any home. This is a favorite soda of those living in my neck of the woods. Sundrop citrus cola. I had to try one in encaustic since I paint so many of these in oil or acrylic. I just sent one to Hawaii! This one is a large piece with lots of texture.

Notice the layers of color and texture in this! Blues beneath the awesome combinations of vibrant reds. I love the layering capabilities of working in beeswax.

This painting was actually done a while back, but I just had not gotten it up on my blog yet. Now that I have more encaustic pieces, I'm ready to start selling and promoting them. They're so much fun to do--very unusual process, and they really make me step out of my box and be ultra creative! As you can see the process of using a torch to fuse each layer also allows for times of complete melting of the beeswax/pigment, creating an abstract.

This one is called "Green Day."

Art With a Twist at Huntsville Museum of Art

Recently I had the pleasure of holding a wine and painting event at the Hunstsville Museum of Art. They call their's Art With a Twist. There were probably about 25 people--all gals and one lucky guy. :) We had such a great time! This is my demo I did for them to mimic. Just like most of my paintings, it is a dancing subject: a martini with mammoth size olives.

Update: I reworked some of this painting and like it much better! Hope you do too!

The Jesus Series Has Begun!

For some time I have been wanting to take several sessions to begin a series on Jesus. I finally began a couple of weeks ago, and it felt so amazing to watch Jesus' face gradually appear on the canvas. I don't know if it's because we're in the Season of Lent right now, and I personally crave Him during this time, anticipating His Passion and walk to the cross.

I will be creating a ministry from my paintings, and I'll post them here. I'll give further details about this ministry as they become more clear to me. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this first one.

Wow, I have just finished drawings for my father's (Bill Hunt )new book that is due out in about 3 months! I'm so excited about this book. I've read alot of it, and think it is going to hit the shelves and fly right off! It is a "sweet romance" genre book, and is called "A Full Grown Man." There will be 14 illustrations to accompany the book, and they are mostly charcoal drawings, and some paintings of mine and my sister Claire Kayer's that are desaturated into black and white. Wow! An unblocking occurred today! Feels great to have accomplished a painting that simply flowed. That hasn't happened in a while. And while I do have other commissions to complete it is just imperative that I do others every now and then to feed my creative soul.

With that being said, I was inspired to do this painting of B. B. King for my husband who has been waiting patiently for a blues singer to put in our lounge here at my studio/gallery. It has a blues bar feel, and this will go great with the existing Van Morrison and huge Corona beer bottle paintings that I did as gifts to Todd that are there already.

This photo isn't that great. I am going to be photographing it with my professional camera soon, but I couldn't wait to share it! Let me know what you think, and if you might be interested in a print of it OR the original at the "right" price. ;)

Encaustic - Red & White

Ta da! I received my paintings on Tuesday from my workshop in Carmel, and I've been so excited about it. I am really proud of some of them since abstract subjects have never come easy to me. But with the encaustic technique of paintng quickly and fusing each layer with a blow torch, abstracts were pretty fun and easy to try. It takes a little bit of going with the flow as you learn to use the torch as a tool or paint brush. So much fun! So this one was one I worked really hard to get smooth and a pure white. That wasn't easy, as I realized that "dinking up" your colors is very easy to do and something I try to avoid in my usual painting. So keeping a pure white was a challenge. So tell me what you think! I plan to show them all in July at my "Twins & Friends Show"--so stay tuned for all the details and plan to come!

California was beyond amazing--I learned encaustic painting from William Harsh, and the bug has bitten me. I am setting up my encaustic studio and will be learning more and producing some NEW work! Check back for some examples as I hope to receive my paintings that I did in Carmel today.

Headin' Out!

I'm leaving tomorrow for what is going to be a dream come true! I've had the dream of going to take a fabulous workshop from another artist somewhere else in the U.S., but I've never found the right artist or workshop. But a few weeks ago, I was flipping through a magazine and found Artista Creative workshops in Carmel, California. "Perfect!" I thought. So the stars aligned, no kidding, and my twin sister Claire and I are going tomorrow on Mother's Day (Happy Mother's Day, Mom!!) to beautiful Carmel to begin our week of relaxing, artistic luxury! I will let you know how it goes. I plan to be away from technology as much as I can be--phones, email, laptop....I'll see you when I get back next week. Please pray for us to have a safe and enlightening trip. I plan to bring back all that I learn to share in my future workshops! Can't wait....

Bee-autiful Day!

Oh my. It couldn't have been nicer outside today. While I took my puppy out to do his business this morning, I noticed an area of our backyard that seemed suddenly so inviting. It's the entrance to the backyard that we rarely use with steps coming down from the porch. To my surprise our oak tree has grown enough to give some pleasant shade and the breeze was just right that I decided to take my easel outside with my lunch and have a cool "artist's date" right at home. Since I've been babysitting Gus, our new boxer puppy, this seemed like the perfect thing since I've been attending to him like a newborn baby so that he'll potty-train as soon as possible. Besides, Gus really likes being outside. Something cute and funny--the breeze was blowing my sundress, and Gus was following the hem of it with his eyes, then jumped up and chomped down on my dress and hit the ground with it. He is really much like a pirana right now. Ouch!....Ok, I "lied" in the painting--there really aren't pretty pink flowers in the pot. But thank goodness for being able to use my artist's license! The painting is in Oil on cradled board, 6x6. Not selling this right now. But let me know what you think of it! Below was my set-up...

He held a golf tournament last month, which Leslie and I shot photos for, and I also told him that I would sell these to raise money for his ministry. A common subject for me--Gustav's most awesome creativity--the Eiffel Tower. It was so powerfully beautiful to me when I saw it many years ago--saw it, photographed it, went to the top of it and photographed Paris from there--really experienced the glory of it. Do you have a story from when you saw it?

I began this painting as a demo for an interview that a young girl was doing about me for her class. She had chosen me as a hero--imagine that! ha! I painted this while she filmed, didn't finish it, and finally finished it last week.

Bottle Parade

This painting is a study I did of glass with a line-up of some of my favorite bottles. My husband had enjoyed the beer in the green beer bottle the night before, and I told him, "I'm going to paint that tomorrow!" So, I did--plus a bunch of other bottles. I love the colors in this. The labels were fun too. My class was inspired and decided to paint this too earlier this week.

This past week in my Creative Spirit class, we painted still lifes with bottles of all kinds. I added some olives and salt & pepper to the collection of glass (our study) and made this subject--one of my favorites. Look for another painting coming of bottles--the girls enjoyed painting them and did a fantastic job on their paintings. Today's painting is one that I demonstrated for my Creative Spirit class--I love these women who have been studying with me since the end of January about spirituality and creativity. We have all learned so much! We have bonded in such beautiful ways too--if only you could hear the beautiful things that God is doing through these girls! Awesome!

Coffee still lifes are pretty common for me to paint, and Sabrina in the class began one, and I couldn't resist painting along with her. Hers turned out beautifully AS DID ALL OF THE GIRLS' PAINTINGS TODAY. Yes, I'm stressing that point.

Takin' a Break!

I'm headed out of town to Valdosta, Georgia with my band, Sister Grace for the next couple of days. We are having a concert, sharing our music ministry Tuesday night. Beach Study

In working on this really large painting for a client, I had run into an issue of working with the photos they gave me of each of the family members. Each is looking toward the camera, and I found it hard to not make the painting like a portrait. So, after looking at several photos of them, I came up with this idea that I really had envisioned for the painting--each of them doing something on the beach with a dramatic sky and other elements from photos they gave me--the island in the distance, a boat, etc. I'm pleased with this idea for them and am waiting to hear if they will go for this. The only thing I plan to do different from this study is to make the figures a bit larger, which will mean bringing the view in closer, eliminating a bit of the sandy area.

Dusk

Are good things every born out of anger and frustration? This was my painting from yesterday, a vase of flowers. You know there is something wrong when Carole paints flowers. People who know me know that I don't typically paint them. It's just that I received some pretty pink roses for Valentine's Day last week, and putting 3 of them in a simple vase inspired me to paint them. It was an okay painting, but in trying to "perfect" it today, I got angry and just did the scribble thing, ruining it. Anyone ever done that? I bet I'm the only one...Well, as I did that, I began doing a practice run of a beach scene that I am actually working on right now as a 3ft. x 4ft. painting for a client. I want my large one to be more like this. This painting, "Dusk" as I've named it, has turned into a study for my commissioned one. So good things can result from frustration. Or maybe it's perseverance?
What I love about this is the sky--it's that time of day on the shore where the clouds are glorious, but people aren't quite discernable as the daylight turns to evening. This is one of my favorite hours when I'm at the beach. This painting is very textural, painted in oil on canvas. Ahhh. Oil.

Can anyone tell I've been home caring for my baby who had a tonsillectomy this week? Forgive any negative vibes that you felt reading this...Blessings!

Fresh off my easel today is "No. 5!" It looks as though it is fresh out of its box too-how thrilling for those of us Chanel No. 5 lovers! Similar to one I painted last year, this one is richer in color--I used some rich oils on this. This painting is on a really nicely finished cradled board with finished black-washed sides. The number one college mascot in the U.S. featured here. Auburn's own Aubie! I found a photo of him in his traditional #1 jersey running with the orange flag before the game as someone else (probably a male cheerleader) is running with the blue flag--and Nova has probably made his pre-game flight too! Traditions are what Auburn is all about...love it!

Rosemary Bike

Still thinking of the great time we had in Rosemary last weekend. I shot a quick shot of my friend Kim's bike as she met us at the Town Hall to help us out (like she does at the drop of a hat). This is her bike--one of the many pastel-colored bikes you see around Rosemary, leaning against the Town Hall wall. I started this a few days ago and finished it this morning. It is painted in oil, and there is an ugly acrylic painting underneath. Any artists out there can relate to this "technique?" haha I love painting over a great underpainting. It allows for some great texture and scumbling, and it inspired me to stay loose!

With Lent here and attending the Ash Wednesday last night, I wanted to paint something I saw in my devotion book--this snippet of Jesus on the cross. I want this season to be a time that I realize my weaknesses and sin and lay them down at the feet of Jesus and improve my ways. I want it to be a closer walk with Him. Look at the peaceful, loving way he sacrificed for me. For YOU too. Each of us. There is no greater love than this.

The Art Lesson

Today, I had a one-on-one art lesson with a most precious lady, Miss Horton. Her grown daughters gave her this as a gift for Christmas. I enjoyed being with her so much--she couldn't have been a more precious student--so talented, yet humble and worked so hard. She stood the whole time in her sneakers. She is 84 years old! I couldn't believe it when she told me. She attends the Silver Sneakers workout group at our local wellness center, she plays bridge weekly and attends a Bible study weekly. That sounds like the secrets she has in staying youthful. Let me tell you--she looks maybe 65. Amazing! I wanted to shoot a photo of her, but my battery was dead in my camera, so I just painted her. My studio has brick walls with a slathering of white stucco on the wall--that is where she is standing. There are wood floors also with track lighting casting the shadows....

Rosemary Sugar Shack

Last weekend at Rosemary Beach, I took about 45 minutes to go outside and paint-- plein air out in the open area in front of the Town Hall--I was dying to get out with my French easel and just paint. Anywhere you look offers such a great painting idea. So, I did it! It was so much fun. The light was changing so quickly as it was near sunset. IT was exhilarating to paint fast and get the paint on there. That's why this painting is so loose--painted fast with alot of gestural strokes. The texture is due to thick and chunky underpainting. What do you think?

This may be my last memorial painting--it is from a photo I shot with a little camera of him and me a few weeks ago. I'm glad I shot it. It really shows his disdain in getting his picture taken and my love for him. He is trusting me in this shot. Funny, huh? Another "memorial" painting of my dog Rocco from a photo I shot not long ago. Knowing that he hated the camera, I had a treat in one hand and my camera in the other asking if he wanted a treat as I tried to get a fun close-up of him. This was his infamous look with his ears pulled way back--his sweet look that was his way of asking, "Please?". The perspective is sort of funky.

This is something I produced this morning as I looked at photos of Rocco, and I loved this one since it was shot in the back of my SUV. I love this look as he looks so happy in the back there getting to go for a ride--one of his favorite things to do. His ears are back as though to hope it's okay to go. Sometimes he would jump in when it wasn't okay to go too. :)

I primed my 6x6 clayboard with black acrylic paint and painted this of Rocco in oil. This will be part of my own collection. NFS

Forgive me for not painting as I've suffered the loss of my precious friend and dog, Rocco. He was put to rest after they discovered tumors that were causing him to lose some bodily functions. I was so caught off guard by this, and I'm left in tears. I miss him so much already--his presence in my house and greeting me when I come home for the past 6 1/2 years. Don't be surprised if you see a painting or two that I might share with you. I painted him a few times....He was a handsome boxer. I plan to be more myself in the coming days. Be blessed...

Yay! I'm painting again after having to work on bookwork last week, and then I went out of town for the weekend for an awesome spiritual retreat. Incredible time--praise God!

Tomorrow I have a special photo shoot happening with a magazine that plans to feature me, my work my studio in an article later this year--I'm so excited but want to keep it a secret as best as I can since things change in the media world so fast and unexpectedly. But I wanted to have in my gallery one of my signature Tabasco pieces, so I set out this morning fired up and ready to paint. It is larger than many that I've painted. It is wildly textural and very juicy, painted in oil...my beloved Tabasco.

In my workshop I taught last night--my awesome students did a fabulous job with the still life I had set up (or thrown down on the floor). Oh man, you will have to see photos of their work. This is my painting, then, from yesterday that was my demo from the class. One thing different that I did for the first time was use Golden Acrylic paint. I've heard so much about how people love that brand, so I unveiled them last night for my students. I loved them! This morning, when I got back to the studio, I saw easily more why I liked them--because they render much like oils with some gloss to some of the colors. Really awesome. Try them if you haven't. The still life was a number of pairs of cool shoes and purses, and I painted a "section" of the still life.

Shoreline Girls

Looking ahead to our Getaway Weekend at Rosemary Beach where my sister and I will teaching and showing our work, I decided to paint a beach scene with some fun-looking chics. I love the way that they look like they are about to fall down laughing--a scene like you would see with a bunch of women acting silly once they're all together. Oh! I've been there!
